The overall community forum was very informative and constructive. We had many people give us amazing ideas to improve our prototype, and it sparked our creativity and gave us new ideas to improve our product. At the forum, we presented our new and improved bird feeder, and shared our Instagram to all of the visitors. In preparation for the forum, i gathered all of my information and wrote many short notes on all of the important informationShylee Ravid- We have come a long way since we started making our bird feeders. When we first designed our bird feeder, it was made of popsicle sticks and hot glue. Then, we designed it with a water bottle, wood sticks and yarn. Now, we are going to make it out of acrylic paint to make it look more professional. We asked 27 people a few questions about our product, and these are the results we got:
Shylee Ravid- This week, we spent class time coming up with possible solutions to solving the issue of bird collisions. More than a billion birds die a year due to collisions with windows. First, we used our research to come up with possible solutions. Then, we researched those ideas even further to see if they already exist, or how to make them better. Lastly, we put our ideas to the final test- the flow chart! The flow chart is an easy way to see if your ideas are reasonable or doable. The flow chart is a list of yes or no questions leading you to see if your idea is good. An image is attached below showing some of our ideas. Our SolutionAlex Umland- After talking to many different organizations we learned that putting bird feeders near windows can help birds not crash into windows. We also knew that cats are a leading cause of bird deaths. After some more research we learned that cats do not like oranges and the scent of them while birds do. So we decided to put the scent of an orange and half an orange to attract cats and to repel cats. So ironically, we are killing two birds with one stone( figuratively). We have had some trouble deciding what we wanted to make the bird feeder out of and what the shape would be. We ended up deciding to make the bird feeder out of a plastic bottle so we could also stop wasting bottles. We also decided to paint some of the bottle red so the birds would be more attracted to it. We had to learn to use an exacto blade so we could cut into the bottle so the birds can eat the seeds. We are going to put the bird feeders near some windows at our homes and time lapse to see if the birds will come or if they won't. We also hope to see that the birds don't fly into the window and instead land on the bird feeder.
Alex Umland -We are Alex, Shylee, and Daylin. We are researching and trying to solve the issues with bird migration. We see that bird populations are dropping and it’s it up to us to help them. We feel like if we have ruined their lives, then we should fix it. Bird migration issues are hard to solve and we want to help the birds eve though it may be a challenge.
Daylin Kaplan- this week, we met with school faculty to get feed -back on our solutions. We initially started with three solutions. Putting non-bird friendly smells near windows, putting decals on windows, and painting windmills neon so birds can see them easier. After the amazing feedback we received, we came to the conclusion that all of our ideas needed major improvement and how we also needed to think about how our product could affect the user. For example, window decals work very well, but most people would not want stickers on their windows blocking their view of nature. After brainstorming more solutions, we thought of bird feeders. Bird feeders are a really great solution because it almost immediately brings attention to the birds, making them stop and want to eat food. Now you may be suspicious about that idea because birds may still see their reflection in a near by window but then we though of putting the window only a foot or two away from the window. This will drop the number of bird vs. window fatalities because the bird will have its focus on the food and will be distracted and forget that a window is near. This solution will improve your community so much because there will be a significant increase in bird population which means that there will be less worms and insects in your area which means there will be less insects ruining your garden. also, Who likes dealing with dead birds on there window sill and in bad cases the shattered glass of a result!?
